How Much Does a Leased Line Cost?

Leased lines have long been the king of internet connectivity, providing superfast fibre optic connectivity to businesses across the UK.

With speeds in excess of 10Gbps (download and upload), leased lines are the chosen form of connectivity for those heavily reliant on their broadband connection. But a common question we get it “how much is a leased line going to cost my business?” That’s exactly what we’re here to answer.

How much does a leased line cost?

The first thing to bear in mind is that the cost of a leased line varies dramatically depending on your circumstances. The things that affect the price of your leased line include:

  • The speeds you’ve opted for
  • The distance from your premises to the nearest fibre point
  • The contract length

The monthly cost of a standard leased line is usually between £100 and £800 per month. I know there is a big parity between these two numbers, but that is because the cost of a leased line varies so wildly.

For example, if you’re in a city centre, and need a relatively low speed leased line (lets say 100Mbps), then the monthly cost is likely to be lower, as you’re close to fibre already, and the speed is fairly low.

However, if your business is 30 miles away from the nearest fibre connection, and needs ultrahigh speeds (10Gbps+), then the cost is likely to be at the higher end of the spectrum.

A leased line is a very worthy investment for businesses with a heavy reliance on internet connectivity, or those that need that high speed connectivity. It is very common for businesses to see the cost of their investment back within the contract length due to increased efficiency and faster online workflows.

Leased line installation costs

Another cost that you do have to consider when choosing a leased line is the installation cost of the line. The great thing about the installing a leased line, is that there are plenty of schemes to help dramatically reduce those costs.

Currently, the UK Government are offering up to £1,200 off your businesses leased line installation cost. This is helping dramatically reduce and even eliminate the installation cost altogether.

But this is not the only scheme available, network operators such as BT, Virgin, TalkTalk and more are offering discounts against the installation of your leased line, as the Government push closer to a full fibre network.

Who might choose a leased line?

It is important to understand that a leased line is not the right option for everyone. For most businesses, a regular fibre broadband connection is plenty for their day-to-day usage. However, some larger businesses, or those with a heavy reliance on broadband may opt for a leased line.

Because they have no geographic restrictions, leased lines are also common with businesses that do not have fibre availability. A leased line can be installed anywhere in the UK, no matter how rural your business is—which makes it a good option for those with poor broadband connectivity.

Benefits of a leased line

We know that the cost of a leased line can be quite daunting—but there are so many benefits that come with having a leased line. These include:

  • Flexible pricing to fit your budget
  • Adjustable speeds, if you need higher speeds we can increase the bearer
  • Totally dedicated and unaffected by ‘peak usage’
  • Ultra-high speeds
  • Incredibly reliable 99.99% uptime
  • Fully managed service
  • UK based, in-house technical support

Leased lines are the fastest, most reliable form of broadband connectivity. Businesses that upgrade to a leased line experience better operational efficiency, and often see a return of their investment over the contract term.
